[Saba Sports News] Devin Booker has seen everything around him change in Phoenix—from teammates and coaches to ownership—but he’s still the one piece the franchise refuses to part with.
According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, the Suns are planning to offer Booker a two-year, $149.8 million extension this offseason—the maximum he’s eligible for.
Already signed through the next three seasons for $171 million, the extension would keep him in Phoenix through age 33 and push his total earnings with the team to over $320 million.
At 28, Booker remains in his prime and continues to be Phoenix’s cornerstone. He averaged 25.6 points and 7.1 assists this season despite the Suns’ struggles. Drafted in 2015, he’s now the team’s longest-tenured player and the face of the franchise.
Phoenix recently fired head coach Mike Budenholzer amid reports of friction with Booker, reinforcing the notion that the team is being built firmly around its star guard.
Booker has reportedly maintained his desire to stay in Phoenix for the long haul, even as the Suns face a bleak outlook—stuck in the second apron with few assets and no playoff berth this year.
While Booker’s future appears secure, the same can’t be said for his co-stars. The Suns are expected to explore trade options for Bradley Beal (despite his no-trade clause), and Kevin Durant’s name is increasingly surfacing in trade rumors.
