[Saba Sports News] A recent report has offered new insight into the blockbuster trade that brought Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Dallas Mavericks faced heavy criticism for the perceived lack of return in the deal, which sent Anthony Davis, young wing Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round pick to Dallas. Notably absent from the package were LA’s 2031 first-round pick and emerging guard Austin Reaves.

According to The Athletic’s Jovan Buha and Sam Amick, a key but overlooked factor played a major role in the trade’s structure: Doncic’s ability to enter free agency after the 2025-26 season.

His uncertain long-term commitment to Los Angeles was reportedly the “primary reason” the Lakers didn’t have to give up more. Doncic holds a \$48.9 million player option for 2026-27, but he could opt out and test free agency if an extension isn’t reached.

While the Lakers are expected to push for a contract extension before the August 2 deadline, uncertainty remains. LeBron James’ future with the team adds another layer of complexity.

Though viewed as Doncic’s natural successor, James doesn’t appear ready to retire, and some believe LA should shift focus to building fully around Doncic as early as this offseason.
