[Jolly Sports News] The Philadelphia 76ers are struggling mightily, but a shake-up in leadership doesn’t appear imminent.
Sam Amick of The Athletic reported this week that both president Daryl Morey and head coach Nick Nurse are currently considered “safe” despite the team’s rough start to the season. According to Amick, there have been no internal discussions regarding the job security of either.
Nurse, a former NBA champion and Coach of the Year with the Toronto Raptors, is in his second season with the 76ers and remains well-regarded for his tactical acumen. Meanwhile, Morey, who has held his position since 2020, has made some questionable decisions, such as forgoing a max deal for James Harden in favor of a similar commitment to Paul George, whose impact has been limited.
However, Morey has earned goodwill with moves like drafting Tyrese Maxey and Jared McCain, signing Kelly Oubre Jr. on a bargain deal, and orchestrating the trade that sent Ben Simmons elsewhere.
Despite these positives, the 76ers currently sit at a league-worst 2-11. Locker room tension has also reportedly emerged, with star players addressing issues among themselves. However, injuries and absences have prevented their Big Three—George, Maxey, and Joel Embiid—from playing a single game together this season, offering a potential explanation for their struggles.
For now, Philadelphia seems unwilling to make any reactionary changes, opting instead to wait and see if the team can turn things around once fully healthy.
