[Jolly Sports News] On Gil’s Arena earlier this week, Kenyon Martin asked Nick Young why he didn’t confront D’Angelo Russell after the infamous 2016 “snitching incident,” which ultimately led to Young’s breakup with then-fiancée Iggy Azalea.
Young explained that the Los Angeles Lakers had intervened, warning him to avoid the arena and practices.
“[Lakers GM] Mitch Kupchak and them told me, ‘Don’t come to the arena, don’t come to practice. If you do anything, we’re gonna take your money,’” Young said.
He recalled that security was present when he returned, preventing any potential confrontation with Russell. By the next season, the incident had cooled off enough to avoid any physical altercation.
This incident took place near the end of the 2015-16 season, so Young and Russell didn’t cross paths often, especially with the Lakers advising Young to keep his distance. When they did see each other before the 2016-17 season, tensions had mostly settled.
When Martin learned that Young still had years left on his contract, he insisted he wouldn’t have let it slide, implying he would have reacted more forcefully.
Young himself admitted he once considered boxing Russell, and although a physical altercation never happened, their relationship has remained tense, with occasional shots fired between them.
The leaked video was the beginning of the end for Young and Azalea. Initially, Azalea claimed everything was fine, but by June 2016, the couple had broken up.
Later, Azalea cited footage revealing Young bringing other women to their home as a factor in the split. After their breakup, Azalea took back furniture and the blue 1964 Impala she’d given Young.
“She took the car and all the furniture,” Young said in a DJ Vlad interview, describing how Azalea’s furniture and his prized car disappeared from his house.
Young managed to retrieve the engagement ring and, three years later, got engaged to his high school sweetheart, Keonna Green. The couple, who had been in an on-and-off relationship since 2002, now have three children and appear to be happily settled.
