[Saba Sports News] Los Angeles Lakers fans collectively held their breath on Saturday after LeBron James suffered a groin injury against the Boston Celtics.
James exited the Lakers’ prime-time matchup at TD Garden with just over seven minutes remaining after a series of spin moves in the paint appeared to strain his groin.
He finished with 22 points, 14 rebounds, and 9 assists on 11-of-23 shooting, but the Lakers ultimately fell 111-101 without him.
According to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, there is internal belief that James will be sidelined for weeks, not days. However, James himself downplayed concerns when speaking to reporters, saying he didn’t see much reason to worry and considered himself day-to-day pending further tests.
Still, the four-time MVP admitted that his mind immediately flashed back to the groin injury he suffered in 2018-19, his first season with the Lakers.
That injury, sustained on Christmas Day against the Warriors, forced him to miss 17 games. While James doesn’t believe this latest setback is as severe, he made sure to knock on wood after bringing it up.
The Lakers entered Saturday’s game riding an eight-game winning streak and tied with the Denver Nuggets for the second-best record in the West.
If James is forced to miss time, Luka Doncic will have to shoulder even more of the load with just 20 games left in the regular season.
