NBA Rescinds Victor Wembanyama’s Strange Technical Foul

[Jolly Sports News] The NBA has once again admitted to making an error with a technical foul call.

San Antonio Spurs rookie star Victor Wembanyama was hit with a highly questionable technical during the fourth quarter of Thursday’s game against the Atlanta Hawks. After being posterized on a drive by Atlanta’s De’Andre Hunter, who stared him down as he fell to the floor, Wembanyama exchanged a few words with Hunter. Both players were assessed double technical fouls.

While the taunting call on Hunter seemed fair, Wembanyama’s technical was baffling—perhaps the first instance of a player getting T’d up simply for being dunked on and stared at. The NBA agreed, announcing on Friday that Wembanyama’s technical had been rescinded following a review.

Wembanyama got the last laugh anyway, scoring eight points in overtime to cap a 42-point performance and lead the Spurs to a 133-126 win over the Hawks.

This marks at least the third time this season the NBA has reversed an incorrect technical foul. Last month, Russell Westbrook had a soft technical rescinded, and just days ago, an Oklahoma City Thunder player saw their celebration-related technical overturned as well.
