[Saba Sports News] A projected NBA lottery pick is reportedly steering clear of the Charlotte Hornets — and it may have everything to do with LaMelo Ball.
According to Carolina Sports Live’s Mike Lacett, an unnamed prospect expected to go in the lottery has declined to work out with the Hornets ahead of next week’s NBA Draft. The reason? The player allegedly does not want to team up with Ball.
Charlotte holds the No. 4 overall pick after finishing with a 19-63 record, the third-worst in the league. Despite the team’s struggles, Ball remains the face of the franchise. The 23-year-old averaged 25.2 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 7.1 assists per game last season — but his style of play may be a sticking point.
Ball is known for his high-usage, ball-dominant approach. He averaged 21.3 shots and 11.2 three-point attempts per game last season — both career highs — and would have ranked among league leaders if he’d played enough games. Durability is another concern: Ball has missed large chunks of the last three seasons due to injuries.
Off the court, Ball has also drawn criticism for reportedly reckless behavior, making him a polarizing figure. Whether due to his playing style, injury history, or reputation, it appears at least one top prospect wants no part of joining forces with him in Charlotte.
