[Jolly Sports News] Joel Embiid recently sparked debate by naming Jimmy Butler the best player in the NBA. During a post-game media session, Embiid lavished praise on his former teammate, emphasizing Butler’s all-around dominance, particularly after Butler’s standout performance in his return to the Miami Heat lineup.
“Jimmy is Jimmy. He does everything—fast on the ball, commanding the floor on both ends. He’s one of the best players in the league, probably top five. Actually, probably the best. Best player in the league. He’s hard to guard,” Embiid said. “It takes a whole team to stop him, and even then, he finds ways to score or create plays for his teammates. He’s an amazing basketball player.”
Butler backed up Embiid’s praise with an impressive showing against the Philadelphia 76ers. After missing four games with a sprained ankle, Butler posted a season-high 30 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists. He shot an efficient 8-12 from the field, 1-1 from three, and a perfect 13-13 from the free-throw line. His play was pivotal as the Heat erased a 19-point deficit to secure a dominant 106-89 win.
While Embiid’s respect for Butler is clear, labeling him the league’s best has sparked debate. Butler has undeniably cemented himself as one of the NBA’s elite, particularly with his clutch playoff performances and two Finals appearances with the Heat.
However, his regular-season numbers and overall consistency fall short of what many consider the criteria for the NBA’s best player.
Butler’s career has been defined by his ability to shine brightest in high-stakes moments, a quality that has earned him immense respect. However, his postseason heroics often contrast with his less dominant regular-season presence, placing him just outside the upper echelon of players like Nikola Jokic, Giannis Antetokounmpo, LeBron James, and Kevin Durant, who dominate year-round.
Despite this, Butler’s impact on the Heat is undeniable. His leadership, two-way excellence, and clutch play make him the heart of Miami’s success. Against the 76ers, Butler’s return reminded everyone of his unique ability to elevate his team, particularly in critical moments.
For Embiid, his admiration likely stems from their time together in Philadelphia, where Butler’s competitive edge left a lasting impression.
While crowning Butler as the NBA’s best may be an exaggeration, it underscores the deep respect Embiid holds for his former teammate. Butler’s legacy continues to be built on his ability to defy expectations and rise to the occasion, solidifying his place among the league’s most impactful players.
