[Saba Sports News] The Memphis Grizzlies may be on the verge of elimination in their first-round series against the Oklahoma City Thunder, but Ja Morant is still delivering highlight-reel moments.
In Tuesday’s Game 2, Memphis suffered another lopsided defeat, falling 118-99 and heading home down 0-2 in the series. Still, one play stood out for Grizzlies fans — Morant’s jaw-dropping chase-down block in the third quarter.
During a Thunder fast break, Chet Holmgren grabbed a rebound and drove coast-to-coast for a layup attempt. But Morant, sprinting the length of the floor, soared to swat Holmgren’s shot near its peak.
The moment was all the more impressive given their size difference — Morant stands 6-foot-2 while Holmgren is 7-foot-1 — yet Morant nearly hit his head on the arena ceiling to make the play (though he might have gotten away with a goaltend).
Morant, a two-time All-Star, has a history of gravity-defying plays like this. Even more remarkable, he pulled it off just a week after suffering a brutal ankle injury — and still looked like he had springs in his shoes.
Unfortunately for Memphis, the excitement didn’t last. After getting dismantled in a historic Game 1 loss, the Grizzlies didn’t show many signs of turning the tide in Game 2 either. A sweep is looking increasingly likely.
