Ja Morant Breaks Silence on Grizzlies Coach Firing

[Saba Sports News] Ja Morant was just as blindsided as the rest of the NBA world by the Memphis Grizzlies’ decision to part ways with head coach Taylor Jenkins.

Basketball insider Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson reported Friday that Morant was “stunned” by the firing, allegedly reacting to the news with a shocked, “Oh s–t.” One Grizzlies team source told Robinson, “Ja was surprised. Ja loves [Jenkins].”

Jenkins, 40, had served as Memphis’ head coach since 2019—the same year Morant was drafted. Over six seasons, Jenkins compiled a .539 win percentage, led the team to multiple 50-win seasons, and secured several division titles.

That’s why the timing of his dismissal—just nine games before the playoffs, with Memphis currently holding a 44-29 record and a top-five seed in the loaded Western Conference—has raised eyebrows around the league.

Tension may have been building behind the scenes, though. A recent sideline altercation between Grizzlies players sparked questions about Jenkins’ command of the locker room. Still, moving on from a coach with a proven track record and a strong bond with the franchise’s star feels like a seismic shift.

With Morant reportedly shocked by the decision, it could hint at a larger shakeup ahead. Trade rumors involving Morant have already been swirling, and this move may add fuel to that fire.

Assistant coach Tuomas Iisalo has been named interim head coach for the remainder of the season.
