[Jolly Sports News] Dr. Jay Varma, NYC’s former COVID-19 policy architect behind the vaccine mandate that sidelined Kyrie Irving during the 2021-2022 NBA season, has been fired after it was revealed that he attended sex parties during the pandemic.
Varma’s “Key to NYC” program required proof of vaccination for indoor venues, including NBA games, preventing Irving, who refused the vaccine, from playing in most home games. This cost Irving a potential $100 million contract extension and led to major backlash.
The irony is thick: Varma imposed strict health guidelines on others, only to flout them in his personal life. He was recorded boasting about keeping Irving off the court due to the mandate, only to later admit to attending large, prohibited gatherings—including two sex parties and a rave—during the pandemic. His actions violated the very protocols he promoted, resulting in his firing from SIGA Technologies.
The public is outraged over the hypocrisy, especially after many, like Irving, faced harsh consequences for personal choices. Irving’s response to the news was cryptic but triumphant, sharing a message of vindication.
Varma’s downfall has sparked renewed debates about public health officials’ integrity and the uneven enforcement of pandemic policies, further eroding trust in those who were supposed to protect public welfare.
