[Jolly Sports News] Lakers rookie Dalton Knecht is quickly making a name for himself with a determined mentality on the court.
Ahead of the Lakers’ game against the Grizzlies, Knecht opened up about his “chip on the shoulder” mindset, a drive forged from years of being overlooked. “I’ve been underrated my whole life, from junior college to high school,” Knecht shared in an interview posted by ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.
“I always play with a chip on my shoulder, regardless of falling in the draft or not.”
The 23-year-old swingman, picked 17th in the 2024 NBA Draft, has already shown glimpses of his potential in preseason and early-season play. His standout moment was a 35-point performance in a preseason win, including the Lakers’ last 20 points and 13 in overtime.
He followed this with 18 points against the Cavaliers, showcasing the scoring ability that initially caught the Lakers’ eye.
Averaging 7.3 points on 47.4% shooting from the field and 37.5% from three, Knecht’s consistency and intensity have secured him valuable rotation minutes, which could increase given recent injuries.
Forward Rui Hachimura is doubtful for Wednesday’s game with an illness, while Anthony Davis is questionable after sustaining a heel contusion in the recent loss to Detroit.
With the Lakers wrapping up their five-game road trip in Memphis, Knecht’s readiness to step up could be crucial, especially if Davis or Hachimura are sidelined. His determination to prove doubters wrong and his ability to perform under pressure embody the grit Lakers fans admire.
Knecht’s relentless mindset and scoring potential make him an exciting player to watch as the Lakers seek reliable depth and consistency this season.
