[Jolly Sports News] Fresh off securing their record-breaking 18th championship banner, the Boston Celtics are once again emerging as the team to beat in the 2024-2025 season.

The defending champions currently sit second in the Eastern Conference with an impressive 20-5 record, and their decision to retain much of last season’s roster has kept their momentum intact.

However, even as the Celtics continue to dominate, their roster isn’t without flaws. While they possess an abundance of talent, the underutilization of young guard Jaden Springer presents an opportunity to bolster the team’s depth with a more seasoned veteran.

Springer, acquired at last season’s trade deadline in exchange for a 2024 second-round pick, played a limited role during the Celtics’ championship run. This season, his opportunities have been even more scarce, as he remains buried on the bench.

With a deep backcourt featuring Jrue Holiday, Derrick White, and a surging Payton Pritchard—an early Sixth Man of the Year contender—Springer has struggled to find consistent playing time under head coach Joe Mazzulla.

Appearing in just seven of the team’s 25 games and averaging under three and a half minutes per contest, Springer’s limited role highlights the logjam in Boston’s backcourt.

While his defensive potential has shown flashes, his offensive production has lagged, with averages of 0.9 points, 0.9 rebounds, and 0.4 assists on 28.6% shooting this season.

Another factor pointing toward a trade is Springer’s expiring rookie contract. The Celtics are paying him around $4 million this season, the final year of a four-year, $10.39 million deal. Given the limited cap flexibility of the Celtics’ championship-caliber roster, Springer stands out as a valuable trade asset.

His combination of youth, potential, and championship experience could appeal to rebuilding teams looking for affordable upside.

Other young players, like Dyson Daniels with the Atlanta Hawks, have flourished in fresh opportunities, suggesting that Springer could benefit from a similar change of scenery.

For the Celtics, moving Springer for a more reliable contributor would provide a boost without disrupting their championship core.

Turning a non-rotational player into a piece that complements their title defense would be a smart move, ensuring they maximize their roster’s potential and maintain their edge in the race for banner No. 19.
