[Saba Sports News] The Philadelphia 76ers delivered a major update on Joel Embiid on Friday, confirming that their star center will be sidelined for the remainder of the season due to his lingering left knee issues.

In a statement, the team announced that Embiid has been deemed “medically unable to play” following consultations with top specialists.

“The Philadelphia 76ers and Joel Embiid have been consulting with top specialists regarding ongoing issues with his left knee. After further evaluation, it has been determined that he is medically unable to play and will miss the remainder of the season to focus on treatment and rehabilitation,” the team stated.

“We are working with medical experts to determine the exact treatment plan and will update media when we have more information. The team and specialists will continue working with Joel to ensure the best path forward for his long-term health and performance.”

This outcome isn’t entirely surprising. The Sixers have been struggling, entering Friday with a 20-38 record and riding a nine-game losing streak. A major factor in their disappointing season has been Embiid’s inability to perform at his usual dominant level.

The reigning MVP has averaged 23.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 0.9 blocks per game in just 19 appearances this season—significantly below his 34.7 points-per-game average last year.

Embiid’s knee problems date back to over a year ago when Golden State’s Jonathan Kuminga fell into him, causing a torn lateral meniscus. He underwent surgery but returned after two months for the playoffs and later played for Team USA in the Paris Olympics.

However, his left knee has continued to bother him, leading the team to list him under “left knee injury management” for much of this season.
