[Jolly Sports News] Former NBA forward Tyler Hansbrough shared his insights on why playing basketball in China posed greater challenges than his NBA career.

Speaking on the Glory Daze with Johnny Manziel podcast, Hansbrough highlighted the stark differences between the leagues, emphasizing physicality, cultural contrasts, and the demanding nature of the game overseas.

“The NBA game has gotten softer, no doubt about it. In China, it felt like stepping into the NBA of the ’80s—physical, relentless, and no shortcuts,” Hansbrough remarked. He described the CBA’s grueling two-a-day practices, hard fouls, and traditional inside play as a far cry from the NBA’s analytics-heavy, load-managed approach.

Reflecting on his time in the CBA, Hansbrough recounted the grind of back-to-back training sessions and the absence of rest periods or “load management,” which are hallmarks of the modern NBA.

The demanding schedule, combined with a focus on toughness and fundamentals, pushed him to grow both mentally and physically.

In contrast to the NBA’s reliance on three-point shooting and advanced statistics, Hansbrough found the CBA’s old-school, physical approach to be both challenging and refreshing.

His experiences overseas deepened his appreciation for the game and underscored the evolving global nature of basketball.

Hansbrough’s basketball journey—spanning seven years in the NBA and a standout stint in the CBA—showcased his adaptability and resilience. From a high-energy bench player in the NBA to a star in the CBA, his grit and dedication remain a testament to his love for the game.
