[Jolly Sports News] The Miami Heat might need to start worrying about the possibility of losing Jimmy Butler to one of their historic rivals.
Michael Scotto of HoopsHype reported this week that there’s growing speculation within league circles about whether Butler could eventually land with the Dallas Mavericks.
However, Scotto noted that rival executives checking in with Miami about Butler have gotten the sense that the Heat are inclined to hold off on any decisions about his future until after the season.
The six-time All-Star, now 35, is set to become an unrestricted free agent next summer after failing to secure a contract extension with Miami during the offseason. While Butler reportedly prefers to stay with the Heat, uncertainty surrounding his future has piqued the interest of other teams.
Scotto also mentioned that another Texas-based team, previously linked to Butler, remains in the mix. Additionally, a top contender in the Western Conference has also been connected to the Heat star.
The Mavericks, coming off a 2024 NBA Finals appearance, appear to be a particularly logical destination. With Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic solidifying the backcourt and PJ Washington and Daniel Gafford anchoring the frontcourt, the small forward position remains their biggest weakness.
After Derrick Jones Jr. departed in free agency, replacements like Klay Thompson and Naji Marshall haven’t been able to provide the same spark.
Adding a player of Butler’s caliber—an elite defender, five-time All-NBA selection, and proven playoff performer—could fill that void and elevate the Mavericks’ championship hopes. For now, though, all eyes remain on how Miami navigates Butler’s uncertain future.
