Nets Drop Big News on Ben Simmons

[Jolly Sports News] Former No. 1 overall pick Ben Simmons appears to be on the move.

Shams Charania of ESPN reported on NBA Today that Simmons and the Brooklyn Nets have begun buyout discussions. If a deal is reached, the Los Angeles Clippers and Cleveland Cavaliers are among the top suitors for the 27-year-old.

This marks a shift from December when both Simmons and the Nets reportedly had no interest in a buyout. However, Simmons has remained healthy and logged 25 minutes per night, giving him reason to believe he can draw interest from a contender.

At this stage in his career, Simmons offers little offensively but remains a strong defensive presence, averaging just under a steal per game.

Despite scoring only 6.2 points per contest, he contributes in other areas with 6.9 assists and 5.2 rebounds per game.

The Nets were unable to rejuvenate Simmons’ career after acquiring him in the blockbuster trade that sent James Harden to Philadelphia. Lingering back issues played a role, but his well-documented shooting struggles have been the bigger obstacle.

A contender may see him as a valuable defensive rotation piece—provided he embraces that role.

A fresh start could benefit Simmons, especially without the weight of his infamous five-year, $177 million contract looming over him.
