Lou Williams Says People Label Luka Doncic a ‘Whiner and Crybaby’ for Constant Complaints to Refs

[Saba Sports News] Luka Doncic has cemented himself as one of the NBA’s most dominant offensive players, but his constant disputes with referees are drawing as much attention as his talent.

Former NBA veteran Lou Williams recently voiced his frustration over Doncic’s on-court demeanor, calling it a distraction from his undeniable greatness.

Speaking on ’Run It Back’, Williams didn’t hold back, “I’ve always hated this part of Luka’s career—where he spends so much time worrying about referees, wrestling, and chirping. It’s part of his reputation.”

Williams noted that while Doncic isn’t necessarily a “whiner” or “crybaby,” his frequent complaints put him in a position to be labeled as such. He expressed hope that as Doncic matures, he will learn to curb his emotional reactions and focus more on leading his team.

This issue was glaring during the Lakers’ recent 111-108 loss to the Brooklyn Nets. Despite securing a triple-double (22 points, 12 rebounds, 12 assists), Doncic’s inefficiency (8-of-26 shooting) and constant arguing with referees overshadowed his performance.

Instead of adjusting his game, he spent crucial moments disputing calls, which hindered the Lakers’ ability to close out the game.

Williams isn’t alone in his criticism. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst previously reported that Doncic’s teammates and coaches have urged him to stop arguing with officials. Yet, the problem persists.

Doncic’s fiery competitiveness is undeniable, but his emotional outbursts risk alienating referees and putting his team at a disadvantage—especially with LeBron James sidelined. If he channels his energy into his game instead of disputes, he has the potential to elevate the Lakers. If not, his frustration could continue to be his Achilles’ heel when it matters most.
