[Jolly Sports News] As Kevin Durant enters his age-36 season, he’s holding off on securing the bag—at least for now.

According to Shams Charania on ESPN’s “NBA Today,” Durant won’t be signing an extension with the Phoenix Suns before the Oct. 21 deadline. He’s currently only eligible for a one-year extension but could get a two-year deal if he waits until next year.

Durant is under contract for $51.2 million this season and $54.7 million next season. While he could lock in more money now, securing his future through 2027 (when he’ll be 39), Durant is opting to wait and potentially extend his deal through age 40.

However, with the Suns’ luxury tax issues and owner Mat Ishbia’s comments on the Big Three’s future, it’s uncertain if Durant will still want to be in Phoenix by this time next year. Durant has a history of seeking new opportunities, so an extension next year is far from guaranteed.
