[Jolly Sports News] Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla stayed true to his hyper-focused reputation with a memorable moment earlier in the week.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the Celtics’ Saturday matchup against the Toronto Raptors, Mazzulla doubled down on his stance against friendly interactions with opposing coaches, citing potential “psychological” disadvantages.

The 36-year-old coach shared an example involving former Celtics assistant Charles Lee, who left the team in the offseason to join the Charlotte Hornets.

With a serious demeanor, Mazzulla detailed how Lee “weaponized” a hug to throw him off his game.

“I told Charles, when he left, ‘I’m not talking to you during the season. I’m not waving during the national anthem. I’m just not doing that,’” Mazzulla explained.

“He breached NBA rules, came into the assistant coach’s locker room, and forced me to give him a hug. That could easily be a psychological tell that knocks you off your game competitively. He knew what he was doing.”

When asked if the hug at least felt “nice,” Mazzulla deadpanned, “No.” While reporters laughed, the coach maintained a completely straight face, showing no sign of joking.

Mazzulla’s ultra-serious mindset has clearly paid off, with a championship ring already under his belt. His unique approach, including a quirky offseason message to Jayson Tatum, seems to be fueling the Celtics’ early-season success.

One thing’s for sure—Mazzulla remains one of the NBA’s most quotable and intensely driven coaches.
