[Jolly Sports News] Atlanta Hawks guard Garrison Mathews might have unofficially auditioned for the Atlanta Falcons’ backup quarterback role on Monday night.
During the Hawks’ matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves at State Farm Arena, a dunk by T-Wolves center Naz Reid trimmed Atlanta’s lead to 85-82 with just 1.2 seconds remaining in the third quarter. What followed was a jaw-dropping display of court vision and precision.
Mathews, channeling his inner NFL quarterback, launched a full-court pass from the baseline with pinpoint accuracy. The ball sailed perfectly to Jalen Johnson, who was positioned right under the rim. Johnson added the exclamation point, finishing the alley-oop with flair. The play was nothing short of spectacular and deserves a second look to truly appreciate Mathews’ incredible throw.
Mathews wasn’t just making flashy passes on Monday — he was on fire. Coming off the bench, he poured in 25 points on an impressive 7-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc, leading the Hawks to a 117-104 victory. He also showcased his defensive chops with a highlight-worthy block on Rudy Gobert, the four-time Defensive Player of the Year.
The Falcons might be set with their quarterback situation for now, but if things go south, Mathews has certainly shown he has the arm to warrant a tryout.
