[Jolly Sports News] Gregg Popovich has taken a moment to address fans and well-wishers following his recent health scare.
On Monday, the legendary San Antonio Spurs head coach issued his first public statement since suffering a stroke in early November. Popovich expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support he’s received and hinted at an eventual return to coaching, though he did not provide a specific timeline.
“This has certainly been an unexpected six weeks for my family and me,” Popovich wrote. “As we work together on my recovery, I want to take a moment to share that the outpouring of support we’ve received during this time has been truly overwhelming in the best possible way. While I wish I could get back to each one of you, for now, let me say that my family and I are forever grateful. We’re thankful to our wonderful community, the entire Spurs organization, and our family and friends.”
Popovich also added a touch of humor, saying, “No one is more excited to see me return to the bench than the talented individuals who have been leading my rehabilitation process. They’ve quickly learned that I’m less than coachable.”
The 75-year-old coaching icon, who has led the Spurs since 1996 and amassed five NBA championships and 1,401 career wins, suffered the stroke just before a game against the Minnesota Timberwolves on November 2.
Since then, assistant coach Mitch Johnson has taken over as interim head coach, guiding the team to an 11-10 record during Popovich’s absence (13-13 overall for the season).
Hearing directly from Popovich about his recovery is a welcome update following the Spurs’ earlier communication on his condition. Fans and the basketball community alike are eagerly anticipating his return to the sidelines.
