[Saba Sports News] On Tuesday night, Giannis Antetokounmpo committed a fundamental basketball blunder that cost the Milwaukee Bucks dearly in the final moments.
Leading the Indiana Pacers 114-111 with just 3.9 seconds left at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, the Bucks were in a simple position—defend the three-point line without fouling.
But Antetokounmpo made the critical mistake of getting too close to Tyrese Haliburton’s landing space as the Pacers star launched a fallaway three off the inbounds pass.
The result? A whistle for a four-point play with just three seconds remaining. Haliburton calmly sank the free throw, flipping the score to 115-114 in favor of Indiana.
Bucks head coach Doc Rivers only made things worse by unsuccessfully challenging the call, costing Milwaukee their final timeout and a chance to advance the ball. With no other options, Antetokounmpo was forced to throw up a desperation heave at the buzzer, which missed the mark.
The stunning finish had major implications for the Eastern Conference standings. The Bucks entered the night with a slim one-game lead over both the Pacers and the Detroit Pistons for the fourth seed.
With Indiana’s win and Detroit’s blowout victory over the Wizards, Antetokounmpo’s late-game mistake could have significant consequences as the playoff race tightens.
