[Jolly Sports News] A former lottery pick’s comeback may have hit a major roadblock before it even started.

Indiana Pacers big man James Wiseman suffered a concerning non-contact injury during Wednesday’s season opener against the Detroit Pistons.

In the first quarter, after missing a three-point attempt, Wiseman appeared to feel discomfort in his left calf while taking a routine step toward the ball.

He was helped off the court by teammate Obi Toppin and quickly ruled out for the rest of the game.

The 23-year-old seven-footer, who joined the Pacers this offseason after playing for the Detroit Pistons last year, averaged 7.1 points and 5.3 rebounds in 63 games. Drafted No. 2 overall by the Golden State Warriors in 2020, Wiseman has struggled to meet expectations and has been labeled a bust by many.

Wiseman missed the entire 2021-22 season due to a knee injury that required multiple surgeries. Now, just one game into the new season, there are serious concerns about another significant setback for the former University of Memphis standout.
