[Jolly Sports News] ### Dwyane Wade Opens Up About Cancer Scare, Undergoing Surgery to Remove 40% of His Kidney
Dwyane Wade recently shared a deeply personal and terrifying health battle. Speaking on his podcast, Wade revealed that in 2023, doctors discovered a cancerous tumor in his kidney.
After the initial shock, he consulted multiple medical professionals and ultimately decided to undergo surgery. The procedure was successful, but it required the removal of 40% of his kidney to ensure the complete removal of the tumor and prevent the cancer from spreading.
“I went in to get myself checked out. I turned 40 years old… I was noticing changes in my body—my stream wasn’t as strong, and I knew my father had gone through some health issues, so I wanted to be proactive. In the process of doing a full body scan, doctors found something on my right kidney. It was a cyst, a tumor, but they couldn’t biopsy it. The only way to know for sure was to surgically remove it.”
When Wade’s doctor told him he needed kidney surgery, the reality of the situation hit hard.
“At that moment, I had a decision to make. I consulted multiple doctors, got as many opinions as I could, and ultimately decided to have the surgery on December 18, 2023. My father walked me to the hospital, and my wife was there when I woke up.”
The diagnosis was confirmed after the procedure—the tumor was cancerous.
“Thank God I had the surgery because the tumor was cancerous. Now, I have one full kidney, and the other is at 60%. They took 40% of it to make sure they got everything. If it had sat there any longer, it could have spread.”
For Wade and his family, this was a life-altering experience. At just 41 years old and in seemingly great health, a cancer diagnosis was a shocking wake-up call. Fortunately, his proactive approach and the expertise of his doctors allowed for early detection and treatment.
While losing part of his kidney was a significant sacrifice, it was a necessary step to ensure his long-term health.
Wade’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of regular health checkups, even for those who appear to be in peak physical condition. Thankfully, his surgery was successful, and he can now focus on recovery and spending time with his loved ones.
