[Saba Sports News] Charles Barkley found himself hilariously unprepared during Friday’s March Madness halftime show.
While covering the first-round matchup between No. 6 seed Illinois and No. 11 Xavier, Barkley joined Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith, and Clark Kellogg on the panel to break down the first half.
Illinois held a 40–35 lead at the break — and Johnson opened the discussion with a softball, “Chuck, what’s your biggest takeaway from the first half?”
Cue the awkward pause.
“Well, I think… umm, that’s a good question,” Barkley said, fumbling through his notes and clearly caught off guard.
Turns out, Barkley had been paying more attention to the Michigan State–Bryant game and wasn’t exactly locked in on the Illini-Musketeers action.
His co-hosts weren’t about to let it slide. Kellogg questioned how Chuck couldn’t follow multiple games at once, while Kenny Smith quipped, “It’s his job!”
Despite the stumble, Illinois kept control in the second half and cruised to an 86–73 win.
This isn’t the first on-air mishap for the “Inside the NBA” crew lately. Just weeks ago, Shaquille O’Neal made headlines for mistakenly praising the wrong NBA coach during a broadcast — making Barkley’s blunder feel slightly less lonely.
