[Saba Sports News] The Phoenix Suns and Kevin Durant could be heading for a breakup unless something drastic changes.
During Sunday’s episode of NBA Countdown, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that if the Suns fail to make a deep playoff run, major organizational changes—including a potential Durant trade—are likely.
However, Phoenix plans to collaborate with Durant to facilitate a trade to a contender of his choice.
“At the trade deadline, Kevin Durant was caught off guard by trade discussions,” Charania said. “This offseason, my understanding is that the Suns and Durant would work together on any potential trade to a contender.”
Charania expects four to six contenders to seriously pursue Durant, noting that he remains an elite player and will be extension-eligible this offseason.
The key question is which teams might step up to acquire the 14-time All-Star. Durant already rejected a trade to the Golden State Warriors at the deadline, and there’s little indication he would reconsider by summer.
However, other Western Conference contenders previously expressed interest and could revisit the idea if Durant becomes available.
With the Suns sitting at 28-32 and currently outside the playoff picture, a deep postseason run seems unlikely. Despite the team’s struggles, Durant is still averaging 26.7 points per game—making him an attractive target for contenders looking for a difference-maker.
