[Jolly Sports News] It’s been a whirlwind few weeks for Los Angeles Lakers rookie Dalton Knecht. At one point, he was on his way to the Charlotte Hornets in a trade that would have brought rising center Mark Williams to L.A.
However, the deal collapsed due to Williams’ failed physical, leaving Knecht in an awkward position—now playing for a team that nearly traded him away.
But Knecht is proving his professionalism, quickly putting the trade drama behind him. He suited up for the Lakers in their recent blowout loss to the Utah Jazz and then made a major impact in the Rising Stars Game on Friday night. Knecht played a key role in leading Team C to a dominant win over the G-League squad in the final.
As a reward, Team C will face Shaq’s OGs in Sunday’s All-Star Game—where Knecht will go up against none other than his Lakers teammate, LeBron James. The rookie is embracing the challenge.
“It might be a lot of fun. I get to play against (LeBron), right? So I get to play against one of my teammates and try to make a statement,” Knecht shared.
James has been vocal about his admiration for Knecht’s game, making their matchup an intriguing storyline for Sunday. Unfortunately, one extra twist won’t come to fruition, as former Lakers star Anthony Davis—recently traded in the shocking Luka Dončić deal—will miss the game due to injury.
With Dončić now in L.A., expectations for the Lakers’ playoff push are sky-high. Adding Mark Williams would have helped fill the void left by Davis, but with that deal falling through, the Lakers now have to reintegrate Knecht into their plans.
His role remains uncertain, but he’s likely to continue as a scoring spark off the bench. However, given the Lakers’ need to balance offense and defense, he may find himself in a limited 15-minute-per-night role moving forward.
