[Jolly Sports News] Not everyone appreciated Jimmy Butler’s attempt to channel his inner Michael Jordan on Friday.
After serving a 7-game suspension for “conduct detrimental to the team,” Butler returned to the Miami Heat lineup for their game against the Denver Nuggets. Hours before tip-off, his agent, Bernie O. Lee, shared a brief statement on social media that quickly went viral:
“The following statement was released today by Jimmy Butler, through his agent, Bernie O. Lee, President of Thread Sports Management LLC. (‘THREAD’) located in Miami, FL., in response to questions about his future career plans: ‘I’m back.’”
The message was a clear nod to Michael Jordan’s iconic “I’m back” statement in 1995 when the Chicago Bulls legend announced his return from a baseball sabbatical.
However, many fans on social media weren’t impressed, pointing out the vast difference between Jordan’s historic comeback and Butler’s return from a short suspension.
Butler leaned into the homage, even sharing photos of himself wearing Jordan’s No. 45 jersey, which MJ famously sported during his return to the NBA in 1995. Fans, however, were quick to roast Butler for what they deemed an over-the-top comparison.
While the Heat have not disclosed specifics about the behavior that led to Butler’s suspension, reports suggest the situation was serious enough for the team to consider additional penalties. For now, Butler has returned to action, but his off-court antics are still stealing the spotlight.
