[Jolly Sports News] With ongoing speculation surrounding Jimmy Butler’s future with the Miami Heat and questions about the team’s championship aspirations, team president Pat Riley delivered a pointed message to his critics on Thursday.
Appearing on The Dan LeBatard Show, Riley was asked about those who feel his sharpness as an executive has waned, especially after the rival Boston Celtics claimed the NBA title in 2024.
Riley made it clear he’s unfazed by the chatter, acknowledging the Celtics’ success while emphasizing his focus on the Heat’s future.
“Whoever’s saying that, I haven’t read it because I am not on any social media site. Not one, and I don’t care,” Riley said.
“I’ve had my a– kicked by the Celtics enough when I was coaching. They’re a great team with a great organization. They’ve broken records financially and committed themselves to winning. New York is better. Philly is going for it. And we’re going for it, too. This is an important year for the Heat.”
Addressing whether he should step back, Riley quipped: “Maybe I should go somewhere and just put my feet up, but I’d then become compulsive-obsessive about doing something else.”
Riley’s comments come amid a standoff with Butler, who has reportedly requested a trade after failing to secure a contract extension.
The Heat, sitting at 18-17 and battling for a playoff spot, face mounting pressure to make decisive moves.
Riley had stated around Christmas that Butler wouldn’t be traded, but Butler’s demand has added public drama to a franchise typically known for keeping conflicts behind closed doors.
Combined with the team’s lack of recent playoff success, some critics have questioned whether Riley has lost his edge.
Despite the noise, Riley’s resolve remains firm. The situation with Butler could present an opportunity for the Heat to reset their roster and prepare for future contention, and Riley seems prepared to steer the franchise through the turbulence.
