[Jolly Sports News] The Dallas Mavericks, despite a solid 20-13 start to the season, have struggled defensively compared to their Finals run last year.
To address this, they may be targeting an All-Defensive talent ahead of the Feb. 6 trade deadline.
In a report, New Orleans Pelicans forward Herbert Jones has been identified as a potential trade target for Dallas. The Mavericks are reportedly exploring options to bolster their perimeter defense, and Jones, 26, fits the mold perfectly.
Standing 6-foot-7, Jones earned All-Defensive First Team honors last season and has continued to impress this year with his disruptive defensive skills. While his offensive game remains inconsistent, Jones is posting career-high averages of 11.1 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game.
The Mavericks’ defensive struggles can largely be attributed to the offseason departure of Derrick Jones Jr., their top perimeter defender.
Adding a player like Herbert Jones could help address that gap. Meanwhile, the Pelicans, at a league-worst 5-28, may seem like plausible trade partners. However, reports suggest New Orleans might be hesitant to part ways with Jones despite their poor record.
Whether or not the Mavericks can strike a deal, targeting Jones signals their intent to shore up their defense for another deep postseason run.
