[Jolly Sports News] A significant prison sentence may be on the horizon for Jontay Porter.

According to a report from SportsNet on Tuesday, the former Toronto Raptors center, who is set to be formally sentenced later this week, is expected to receive a prison term of around four years.

Prosecutors have estimated his sentence for conspiracy to commit wire fraud—a charge to which Porter pled guilty in July—will range between 41 to 51 months. While the maximum penalty for the crime is 20 years, the court appears likely to impose a much shorter term.

The 25-year-old Porter, who played in 26 games for the Raptors last season, was banned from the NBA for life in April following revelations of his involvement in a betting scandal.

NBA officials were tipped off to irregularities in prop bets placed on Porter, which uncovered that he had shared confidential health information with a bettor. This allowed the individual to profit on under bets when Porter exited games early due to injuries.

Further investigation revealed that Porter’s gambling activities extended beyond this incident. In particular, it was discovered that Porter had intentionally influenced his own performance in games to resolve gambling debts, a violation of one of the fundamental rules of sports betting.

Porter’s guilty plea to conspiracy to commit wire fraud over the summer marked a turning point in the criminal case. His subsequent request for leniency was denied by the court, signaling the seriousness with which his actions are being treated.

In the wake of the scandal, the NBA has been working with sportsbooks to tighten protocols and address vulnerabilities exposed by Porter’s case. As for Porter himself, he now faces the likelihood of serving multiple years in prison for his role in the fraudulent scheme.
