[Jolly Sports News] If the Miami Heat seriously consider trading Jimmy Butler, the Phoenix Suns have emerged as a potential suitor. However, significant obstacles stand in the way of any deal coming to fruition.
In a recent episode of *The Hoop Collective* podcast, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst confirmed the Suns’ interest in Butler but outlined the challenges involved. According to Windhorst, Phoenix can realistically only trade one of three players for Butler: Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, or Bradley Beal. Among them, Beal is the most logical trade candidate, but complications abound.
“I know that the Suns have interest in Jimmy Butler,” Windhorst said. “This is not a controversial statement. It is not some sort of secrecy. Jimmy would like $100 million, and I think the Suns might give it to him. But there’s only three players the Suns could trade for Jimmy Butler: Kevin Durant, Bradley Beal, and Devin Booker. That’s it. … (Beal) is the player you’d want to trade in a vacuum.”
Beal, however, has a no-trade clause in his contract, which he would need to waive for a deal with Miami. While he previously expressed interest in joining the Heat when he was with the Wizards, Miami’s interest in Beal is uncertain, particularly given his struggles with health and form.
In addition, Windhorst noted that the Heat would likely push to remove Beal’s no-trade clause as part of any deal, a move Beal would likely resist. These factors tie the Suns to Beal’s sizable contract, complicating their ability to pursue Butler.
Beal, who still has two years and roughly $110 million remaining on his deal, has faced durability issues and declining performance. This season, he’s averaging just 17.8 points per game—the lowest since 2015-16—and has already missed ten games. He has not played more than 60 games in a season since 2020-21.
While the Suns’ interest in Butler lends credence to recent rumors, the realities of their roster and Beal’s contract make a trade unlikely. For now, Phoenix appears stuck with Beal, limiting their ability to make a serious play for Butler.
