[Jolly Sports News] The New Orleans Pelicans are reportedly exploring the possibility of trading Zion Williamson ahead of the February 6 trade deadline, though they may have to settle for a significantly discounted return.
According to Bobby Marks of ESPN, the Pelicans could expect expiring contracts and “perhaps” a future first-round draft pick in exchange for the two-time All-Star forward.
While this seems like a modest return for a former No. 1 overall pick, Williamson’s health and availability remain major concerns.
Over the weekend, reports surfaced that the Pelicans were considering moving on from the 24-year-old, who has averaged an impressive 27 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists per game over his career.
However, Williamson has struggled to stay on the court, averaging just 33 games per season due to a string of injuries. His latest setback has only compounded doubts about his durability.
Marks also pointed out that Williamson’s contract includes team-friendly protections, allowing the Pelicans to release him without penalty after the 2024-25 season.
However, the team reportedly has no intention of taking that route. Instead, they may lean toward a full rebuild, with trading Williamson as a potential centerpiece of that strategy.
For a player of Williamson’s talent, a discounted trade value underscores the challenges of building around a star who struggles to stay healthy. As the 5-22 Pelicans face tough decisions, the next few weeks could define the franchise’s direction moving forward.
