[Jolly Sports News] Buddy Hield shared his love for playing with the Golden State Warriors while throwing a subtle jab at his former team, the Philadelphia 76ers. After head coach Steve Kerr’s lineup adjustment in Sunday’s 114-106 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves, Hield shined with seven three-pointers and 27 points, complementing Stephen Curry’s 30-point performance.
Reflecting on his tough 2023-24 season with the 76ers, Hield admitted to NBATV that basketball had lost its joy for him.
“Last year, I didn’t have that love [for basketball],” Hield said. “We wanted to find a team where I could feel appreciated and loved. This team is so unselfish.”
Hield credited Warriors stars Curry and Kerr for reaching out to him during free agency, paving the way for his two-year, $21 million deal through a sign-and-trade with Philadelphia. He noted how his new teammates welcomed him warmly, helping him regain his confidence and enjoy the game again.
“Steph, Steve, Draymond, GP [Gary Payton II]—everyone has been supportive,” Hield said. “This team plays unselfishly, makes the right plays, and creates an amazing environment on and off the court. I’m learning so much from being around champions.”
Hield highlighted the championship culture within the Warriors organization as a key factor in his renewed passion for the game.
“I haven’t won in this league yet, so I’m here to learn their championship habits. Everything they do, I’m soaking it all in,” he said.
Sunday’s game also saw Kerr’s tactical decision-making shine. With Andrew Wiggins sidelined due to an ankle injury, Kerr altered the starting lineup, pairing Gary Payton II with Curry to defend Anthony Edwards and giving Hield a starting spot alongside the star guard.
“Without Wiggins, we wanted Gary on Edwards right away,” Kerr explained postgame. “Gary complements Steph well, and we felt the best way to get Buddy going was to put him in that group. Playing alongside Steph simplifies the game for him.”
The strategy paid off, with Hield flourishing in his new role. As he continues to adapt to the Warriors’ style, it’s clear that his fresh start in Golden State has reignited his love for basketball and his drive for success.
