[Jolly Sports News] According to a report from BasketNews, the Los Angeles Lakers guard has expressed interest in playing for Lithuania’s national team. Russell reportedly hopes to represent the country in FIBA tournaments and potentially in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

This opportunity stems from Russell’s connection to Lithuania through his wife, Laura Ivaniukas, who is of Lithuanian descent. The couple, who share two children, opens the possibility for Russell to acquire Lithuanian citizenship—a requirement for representing the country internationally.

The 28-year-old former All-Star is averaging a career-low 11.5 points per game this season and was recently moved to a bench role following a rough performance. His inconsistent, offense-heavy style has made him a longshot for the U.S. team in international competitions like the Olympics.

Switching allegiance to Lithuania could offer Russell a fresh path, especially as he seeks to maintain relevance on the international stage. Additionally, his ties to Lithuania might even help the country land one of the Lakers’ rumored trade targets currently associated with their national team.
