[Jolly Sports News] Reports surfaced Monday of a rumored NBA investigation into the Knicks’ recent promotion of Rick Brunson, father of star guard Jalen Brunson.

Rick Brunson was elevated to the role of lead assistant on Tom Thibodeau’s coaching staff this season, replacing Johnnie Bryant, who departed for a role with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The promotion coincided with Jalen Brunson re-signing with the Knicks in July, reportedly taking a significant discount to help the team maintain salary cap flexibility.

Speculation arose that the NBA might be probing Rick’s promotion to ensure there were no under-the-table agreements tied to Jalen’s contract. Knicks and league reporters confirmed Monday that the NBA had reached out to the team about the matter.

The Knicks, however, responded strongly, calling the investigation “offensive” and “harassment.” MSG Sports released a statement defending Rick Brunson’s credentials, noting he replaced Bryant at the same salary. “It’s offensive to suggest Rick didn’t deserve this promotion.

He has done a tremendous job and will continue to do so. This feels like more harassment of the Knicks due to our stance on certain NBA matters,” the statement read.

Rick Brunson joined the Knicks’ coaching staff in 2022, the same offseason his son Jalen signed with the team. A former NBA journeyman, Rick brings over a decade of coaching experience, having worked with the Denver Nuggets, Chicago Bulls, Charlotte Hornets, and Minnesota Timberwolves.
