[Jolly Sports News] Earlier this week, Lakers head coach JJ Redick praised D’Angelo Russell as one of the team’s “vocal leaders.”

But in Wednesday’s 131-114 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies, Russell frustrated Redick with a risky, off-balance three-pointer that was blocked, leading to an angry sideline reaction from Redick.

Russell was benched, though Redick clarified the move wasn’t a punishment. “It’s about compete level and attention to detail. At times he’s great, but other times he reverts to certain habits,” Redick said, explaining it was a decision aimed at winning the game.

On Friday, Russell came off the bench again in a 116-106 win over the 76ers, sounding humbled and focused on the team. “I just wanted to win,” he told ESPN, embracing his new role. He played 25 minutes, scoring 18 points and adding three assists, earning more praise from Redick.

“Big-time pop off the bench,” Redick said, calling it an “efficient night” and noting Russell’s solid play. While he didn’t confirm Russell’s return to the starting lineup, Redick noted the situation is “fluid.” For now, Russell seems content to support the team however he can.
