[Jolly Sports News] Rumors suggested some teams would try to lure OG Anunoby away from the New York Knicks this summer, but they won’t get the chance.
Anunoby agreed to a five-year, $212.5 million contract with the Knicks on Wednesday, including a trade kicker and a player option, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. The Knicks could offer up to $245 million over five years, and initial concerns about the offer were quickly resolved.
Ian Begley of SNY reported that Anunoby was likely to receive max offers if he hit the open market but has strong faith in the Knicks’ vision. The Knicks acquired Anunoby from Toronto last December for RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley, betting they could re-sign him long-term. Despite being limited by injury to 23 regular-season games and nine playoff appearances, Anunoby excelled, averaging 14.1 points per game with strong defense.
Other teams were reportedly ready to make big offers if Anunoby became a free agent, but that won’t happen now. The Knicks can focus on other offseason moves, having secured another key player.
