[Jolly Sports News] If Paul George leaves in free agency this offseason, the LA Clippers might pursue an older player.
Michael Scotto of HoopsHype reported that the Clippers could target six-time All-Star DeMar DeRozan if they can’t retain George. Although DeRozan is expected to return to the Bulls as an unrestricted free agent, he could be a sign-and-trade option for the Clippers if George departs.
George, 34, is eligible for a four-year, $221 million max deal, but the Clippers are hesitant to pay him more than Kawhi Leonard’s recent three-year, $150 million contract. The team’s luxury tax concerns and need to negotiate a new deal for James Harden also complicate matters. This situation could lead George to leave when he becomes a free agent at the end of June.
DeRozan, a native of the L.A. area, is an elite scorer, clutch player, and has developed strong playmaking skills. However, he is a downgrade from George in defense and three-point shooting and is slightly older, turning 35 in August. His midrange-heavy style also might not fit well with Leonard’s similar game.
Despite these drawbacks, a sign-and-trade for DeRozan could be better than losing George for nothing. With the Clippers moving to their new home, the Intuit Dome, in 2024-25, they need big names to attract fans. Along with DeRozan, the Clippers have been linked to other aging former All-Stars.
